Strengthening the Mind and Career: How Weightlifting Transformed My Professional Journey

By Razvan Dominic Ionescu

A board member of Bench Mark Program since 2020, Razvan is a finance professional who is not only passionate about self development and strength training, but regularly volunteers to clean up litter in his community, and whenever he travels, whether on business or for pleasure. He recently launched the website www.OneBeautifulPlanet.org, to share his journey in public service, environmental education, and track action toward a cleaner, healthier world.

In the fast-moving world of finance, where spreadsheets, transactions, and people intertwine in a competitive environment, the pursuit of success demands more than just intellectual prowess.

It requires mental fortitude, resilience, and the ability to navigate through stressful situations – and with as much grace as possible. Surprisingly, it was the practice of strength training and lifting weights that significantly bolstered my capabilities, enabling me to excel in my career and beyond.

Strength training, particularly when undertaken in an organized gym environment with guidance from experienced mentors, offers a multitude of benefits for youth and young men in particular. Beyond the physical gains, this practice nurtures mental fortitude, enhances overall health, fosters a sense of community, and cultivates invaluable life skills.

Initially, my interest in weightlifting stemmed from a desire for physical fitness and a need to counterbalance the sedentary nature of my job. However, what started as a means to improve my physical health soon transcended into a powerful tool that enriched my professional life in unexpected ways.

Firstly, the physical benefits of weightlifting laid the foundation for my mental resilience. The discipline required to adhere to a workout routine seamlessly translated into discipline in my professional life. Consistently hitting the gym and creating my own routines taught me the value of commitment, which directly paralleled my dedication to achieving financial goals and meeting deadlines. The persistence required to add an lift that extra pound to the bar, to push through that final repetition, mirrors the perseverance needed to overcome obstacles in the financial world.

Moreover, the mental skills honed during weightlifting sessions became my secret weapon in navigating the challenges of my finance career and those of currency markets in particular. The ability to maintain focus during intense workouts translated into enhanced concentration and attention to detail in my work, which involves rapidly changing market prices. Weightlifting demands strategic planning and execution to progress effectively, a skill that directly applies to analyzing complex financial data and making critical decisions in real-time.

One of the most remarkable impacts of weightlifting on my career was its ability to equip me with the stamina required for long hours and high-pressure situations. As I challenged my physical limits in the gym, I found myself better equipped to handle the mental strain of dealing with high-stakes financial transactions and other professionals of the highest caliber. The endurance built through lifting weights helped me stay composed, think clearly under pressure, and sustain productivity during demanding periods at work.

Furthermore, weightlifting taught me the art of resilience. Every failed attempt at lifting heavier weights served as a lesson in perseverance. Similarly, setbacks in my professional journey became stepping stones for growth rather than roadblocks: I just learned to look at the world differently, through the lens of opportunity and teachable moments. The resilience I gained from weightlifting enabled me to bounce back from setbacks, learn from failures, and approach challenges in my career with a positive and determined mindset.

Ultimately, the holistic impact of strength training on my career is something that cannot be taken for granted, and must be continuously nurtured to remain active. Beyond physical fitness, lifting weights shaped my mental strength, honed crucial professional skills, and provided a solid foundation for success in the high-paced, intellectually demanding field of business. It's not merely about the weights lifted in the gym; it's about the transformation of the mind and the resilience gained, propelling me forward in my career, business and personal relationships, and broader endeavors throughout my life.

Mentor Spotlight: Wilfredo (Junior) Rosario Jr.

Junior has been a mentor at Bench Mark Program for over 3 years. He was originally connected with Bench Mark Program by a court judge suggesting where to do his community service hours. However, he has quickly become one of our favorite boxing coaches and a dependable presence in the gym . After spending only a few minutes talking with Junior, you can clearly see the passion and heart he has for our students. His commitment to growth in all aspects in his life inspires us and our students.

He credits Will Kiefer for not only giving him the opportunity to mentor at Bench Mark Program, but welcoming him as part of the Bench Mark Program family.

1.Name/Info: Wilfredo Rosario Jr. is my full name but everyone knows me by Junior. I worked in the hotel industry for several years, and also did construction work at a younger age. I was a General Delegate for a Private Detectives and Security Guards Union, among other jobs and positions throughout the years. I am a father of 3 kids and 6 grandkids which I love very much making my favorite motto “family first.” I'm a huge animal person. I have a great sense of humor. I enjoy and am passionate about writing. I played volleyball and although I was very good at it, my passion has always been boxing.

2. Why did you choose to volunteer/mentor?

I can't really say I chose Bench Mark Program but it kind of chose me. Even though it was an option as community service by court officials I can say I am really blessed finding Bench Mark Program. It gave me, not only a chance for a change, but a chance for growth! We all have our good days and bad days but whatever way I'm feeling, doing what I do makes a difference not only for others but for myself. Will Kiefer is the reason I'm here today for accepting me without judgment and for that I'm thankful.

3. Share one of your favorite stories from your time at Bench Mark Program (with a student, other staff members, etc.)

Is hard to just mention one story when there are many. Every kid has their own way or comes with their own issues. It is really about how we work with them and around them. The stories of Roniel & Yaniel come to mind. Seeing the growth of these two kids become great athletes which is leading them to something bigger and having the chance to see them lead the way they do amazes me. Roniel was the first kid from Bench Mark Program who was given, what I like to call, a “Sponsors Scholarship". We became involved in a local gym, Jinji's Boxing Club, and they helped us and our kids to achieve and conquer their dreams of boxing. Roniel holds a score of 4-1 as an amateur fighter and is ranked on the Silver Gloves Nationals.

(Yaniel after winning his first fight pictured on right.) Yaniel is a special kid, having him in our program and in my life is a blessing. After receiving my Coaches Book it was time for Yaniel to have his first event as an amateur fighter. That day was full of surprises, and Jinji and Jessica Martinez allowed me to come to his corner during the fight.  The feeling, the excitement, the glory of not only being there for Yaniel but seeing him win with hard work, determination and above all discipline. Coaching my first fight as a green level coach was an amazing experience, but winning it, WOW, was even better!

5. What is your best advice for those wanting to volunteer/mentor at a nonprofit? Respect, among anything and everything. Embrace what you do and teach. Be a family to our kids and community, and learn as we see the growth and accomplishments of our kids.

Jojo's Story

Jojo’s mentor Tyson on left

When Jojo arrived at Bench Mark Program, he was trying to turn his life around. He needed encouragement and someone to hold him accountable, then he met Bench Mark Program team member, Tyson. Tyson committed every morning to driving Jojo to school so he would have the motivation to graduate. Shortly before Jojo’s graduation, he wrote a powerful story about his life and moving forward from the trauma he experienced. We are so thankful for mentors like Tyson and students like Jojo that make a commitment to change and inspire many along the way.

Trauma

It all began when I started being around the wrong crowd. We lived a life like a movie, going out partying and having fun doing the wrong things. I started smoking weed at a young age. Later on weed was not doing it so I moved on to something else that got me more high, pills. They were like an escape from feeling alone in a world full of people. It was a distraction for me from certain things I was going through at home. Nothing was ever easy, we did not have it all.

Things were rough at home. There wasn’t any food almost everyday. I had to find a way to survive. My mom was always bitchin, saying I’m going down the wrong path. She told me I wouldn’t graduate and that I’m going to be a bum. All she saw was how I was like my pops and how I would end up in jail too. Her new boyfriend was being stingy with everything I did and it even got to a point where I was going to fuck him up. Even if there was food they would keep it to themselves.

I chose to be in the streets because it was a way for me to get away from the toxic home. I had no one to rely on so my friends became my family. They showed me the ropes of the streets and how to get money. I started trappin so I could provide for myself so I could eat and put nicer clothes on my back. It was still hard, but I had to stay positive. I started to use my mom's toxic traits to motivate me and keep a smile on my face.

Eventually, I met this girl and I started to stay with her because I didn’t want to go home. She ended up being my girlfriend and a few months later we were on the phone and she started to get the feeling that she may be pregnant. Her test came back positive and didn’t know what to do. I was stuck. I didn't think I was ready to be a dad, but I wasn’t going to stand down. She started to talk about herself and future and how this would mess everything up so after a long conversation we came to the conclusion that we weren’t ready. I would have wanted to be financially stable and be able to give my child anything they wanted and not have them grow up the way I did.

I started popping pills more often while I was with my girl, but I started to become another person towards people, I wasn’t myself. She kept telling me to stop doing them but I didn’t listen. For a month I was clean but went back to it. I was on the phone with my girl and was at my moms house. I popped some pills and I was passing out the last words I remember telling her were “tell my mom I love her”. I ended up going to my moms boyfriend because he was the closest for a ride and he took me to the hospital and on the way to the hospital I was falling asleep in the backseat when I got to the hospital they said they can’t help me and I had to go another side then they put me on the hospital bed and as soon as I touched the bed I died, but they used Narcan three times to revive me. I was dead for 10 minutes before the Narcan finally worked. I was alive again.

After everything happened I started to look at life differently and not take it for granted. I stopped taking pills and started to do more productive stuff. I still smoked weed but it was not like I did before. I started to be more positive with myself and with other people. I started to surround myself around a better crowd especially when I started to come to Bench Mark Program. I started to come to school more and started to work on my grades now I have motivation to graduate.

However, I hit another obstacle and I lost a close friend. He was family to me. He taught me stuff I never knew before. He taught me how to move smart and always watch out for everything. It hit hard because he was a part of the family I made outside of home. I feel like his death brought all of us closer than we were before. I was willing to risk it all for him but I was not there.

A couple months later after the passing it wasn’t the same but I had to move on. I started to do better I got a job at Bench Mark Program. I’m closer to graduating and need a little work but I’m going to get there. Now it’s up to me to make everything that I want happen and to stay positive through it all. I won’t let the past define My future.

Sincerely,

JoJo

Student Leadership Program: Uplifting Tomorrow's Leaders

Bench Mark’s core purpose is to create a space where one generation of leaders can uplift the next. Since our inception in 2014, we have been instilling the value of community leadership in our students and mentors, but it wasn’t until last year, thanks to our success at the ExtraGive, that we officially launched our Student Leadership Program (SLP). In January, 2020 we invited Ntihemuka (Muka) and Johnny into our SLP’s inaugural class of leaders. Throughout the course of this year, despite all of the challenges that Covid has put in front of us, we are thrilled to report that both Muka and Johnny have graduated from the program. Both young men now work at Bench Mark as mentors to younger students, and Muka is attending a college gap-year program called OneLife while Johnny has secured a full-time job with our friend Brad Groff at River Valley Landscaping. Both are shining examples of what young leaders can achieve through SLP, and both have blazed the trail for the five additional student leaders currently enrolled in the program.

The Student Leadership Program is built around three levels of challenges that give students goals to achieve and coursework to complete before they can  be considered for promotion into the next level of leadership training.  Students who are in the program are motivated by increasing levels of responsibility and increasing compensation as they progress . Outside of Bench Mark Program’s proprietary leadership training coursework and increasing levels of responsibility in our Open Gym Program, through the Student Leadership Program, individuals learn how to interact with an employer (Bench Mark Program) and gather basic employment skills. What Muka and Johnny have taught us is that through the Student Leadership Program, we can instill the skills, work ethic, and knowledge that our student leaders need not just to  make Bench Mark a better place, but to provide value to the Lancaster community and workforce as a whole.

All students entering into the Student Leadership Program at Level 1 must be 15 years old and have shown commitment to the organization through regular weekly attendance. Commitment  means they must participate in our Open Gym and/or our Strength Based Skill Building Program and follow the basic rules of Bench Mark to ensure they’re setting a good  example for others. As was the case with Muka and Johnny, we specifically seek out student leaders who display a propensity to help others in the gym, and uplift everyone’s spirits when they’re around. Those are the students who we approach with the opportunity to engage in our Student Leadership Program. The first level of engagement in SLP does not include compensation, but allows students  to participate in weekly leadership training sessions and hopefully get them excited to achieve more in consideration of their next level of growth. Advancement into Level 2 of our leadership program is strictly optional.

Entry into Level 2 becomes available to student leaders after at least one month of committed engagement at Level 1 and a proven track record of being  able to take direction from staff and an agreement to a specific job or role in the gym (ex. agreeing to assist the boxing coach with weekly classes). At Level 2, students are expected to do more at the gym, like help clean the space and organize equipment. Level 2 student leaders are also required to shadow a staff member in the gym so that they can learn essential mentoring techniques. Teaching Bench Mark’s essential mentoring techniques requires a significant investment on the part of our staff members. Most importantly,  Level 2 student leaders are required to attend weekly enrichment activities designed to help them gather new leadership techniques  and prepare for the next level of the student leadership  program. These enrichment activities include (but are not limited to): leadership book club, group analysis of business case studies, working through Admired Leadership training (credit: CRA, Inc), authentic communication training, legal life skills training, financial literacy training, and workplace etiquette.   Level 2 student leaders begin earning $8/hour for their time on the job, but in consideration of performance on the job and in school, they can earn up to a max of $12/hour.  To climb the compensation ladder, Level 2 students must regularly be rated as “meets” or “exceeds” expectations (this occurs on weekly basis), must assist a certain number of students in resume writing, must help a certain number of students apply for jobs, must assist a certain number of students in goal setting, and must ultimately help a certain number of students achieve their stated goals.

The final stage of the Student Leadership Program is Level 3. This level entails traditional employment (full-time or part-time) at Bench Mark. Muka and Johnny are currently our Level 3 graduates. This highest level is available to students who have been through the first two levels and succeeded  in Level 2 with an ability to display an impressive list of students served . Along with the duties that come with Level 2 student leaders, Level 3 leaders are expected to  mentor up-and-coming Level 1 and 2 participants through the program and participate in (or lead)  weekly enrichment activities. Level 3 student leaders  are  responsible for opening and closing the gym when needed, and if able, can transport other students to and from the facility. This level comes with additional monthly Leadership Enrichment Sessions to ensure that participants stay on track toward their goals and can provide feedback on their roles and the program. Participants at Level 3 are able to make between $12-15 dollars an hour, depending on performance.

At Bench Mark Program, we believe that investing in our students’ leadership skills is the best way to ensure their personal growth, multiply our impact, and sustain our organization. The launch of this Student Leadership Program was made possible by our successful 2019 Extra Give campaign, but in order to welcome up-and-coming leaders into the program, we need your continued support. Our projected fundraising need for one year of this program is just over $70,000. This year, through the ExtraGive on November 20th, you can help us empower a whole new class of student leaders from Bench Mark Program. There are five Bench Mark student leaders right now who need your support. Will you invest in them this year through the ExtraGive?

Staff Spotlight: Darren Landis

Darren Landis has been an incredible asset to the Bench Mark team since joining us as a mentor in 2017 and then as a staff member in 2018. His career started in law enforcement but he was looking for a path to create more relationships in his community that law enforcement didn't always allow. Bench Mark allowed Darren to build relationships with young people in Lancaster and use his background and resources to mentor our students toward a successful future.

Title/Description: Mentor

Years at Bench Mark Program: 5 years

What has been your favorite thing about being a part of Bench Mark Program (gym, outings, tutoring etc.)?

I enjoy the gym environment and the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself while still feeling like the actions I commit matter and have an impact. I enjoy the familial bonds we have built and the bonds we continue to build to this day, the future and beyond.

Why do you think Bench Mark Program is so important to the Lancaster community?

I believe Benchmark Program has a big impact on the youth and gives them an alternative to just being a product of their environment. Bench mark program is a place where the youth can become successful with the help of a mentor who helps them feel they matter and that the things they want to do in life have value.

How was Bench Mark Program changed and shaped you as a person?

P1444998 (1).jpg

The mentors at benchmark made me realise I am much more than my pain and that kindness is real, that selflessness and chivalry are great character traits for me to possess. I am not weak for showing kindness and that I am stronger than I realise.

Other than Bench Mark, what is something you’re passionate about?

Other than Benchmark I am also passionate about music. For me listening to and making music is not just my passion or a dream it is my lifeline my very essence. It is another big part of what makes me who I am today.

If you were a superhero, what would you want your superpower to be and why?

I would choose a mix of instant learning with eidetic memory so I can become a learning powerhouse. I enjoy reading and learning in general but my brain as with any humans can only retain so much before we start to forget.

If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be and why?

I would choose music theory, even though I'm learning it now and it's already a big help if I became a sudden expert that would increase my ability to produce instrumentals by several fold.

Creative, intelligent, and spiritual

To be in a position where I have enough wealth and power where I can take care of those closest to me while still having a positive impact on the world outside of my family and social circle.

Staff Spotlight: Alli Doughton

Bench Mark Program mentor, Alli Doughton, spends her days helping people as an Occupational Therapist, but that’s not where her generosity and compassion stops. For the last year and a half, she has come to the Bench Mark gym consistently every week to connect with our students while working out. She has made it her mission to empower the young women at Bench Mark and we know they appreciate her upbeat attitude and friendly personality that she brings to the gym every day!

1.     What has been your favorite thing about being a part of Bench Mark Program?

I appreciate the community that is Bench Mark. On any given night I know that I will have the space and time to not only workout but also to connect with students and mentors through interactions that are authentic because of the comfortable environment of the gym.

2.    What do you hope the students can learn from you and your experiences?

I hope to impart the value of self-efficacy especially to the young women who come for a workout. After gaining experience in one skill that used to be unfamiliar or difficult, such as completing a push-up, squat or maybe even a pullup, that confidence can spread to other areas of life. I continue to struggle with self-esteem and I wish to empower each young woman to find their own confidence and maintain that so they will not hesitate to try new things throughout the course of their lives.

3.    Why do you think Bench Mark is so important to the Lancaster community?

Bench Mark is valuable for many reasons, one being the physical safe haven or escape that it provides to so many students and mentors. I have heard comments from students who were going through an especially difficult time in their home or school life, but I would have never suspected it because of how relaxed and comfortable they were when they came to the gym. Bench Mark serves multiple purposes, including a space to workout frustrations and learn new weightlifting techniques, catch up on homework, write resumes and fill out job applications, as well as a place to receive advice or find a listening ear when a workout just isn't enough. To have a reliable place that offers all of those crucial pieces for students is remarkable and should be treasured for what it offers to the students of Lancaster County.

Okay, now for some real thought-provoking questions…

1.    If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ice cream! Mint chocolate chip or anything chocolate for sure.

2.    What is your spirit animal and why?

I love elephants for their calm nature combined with their overpowering strength that is only used when absolutely necessary. I don't know that I am like an elephant, but I have always loved their essence.

3.    If you had to choose just one decade to listen to music from for the rest of your life what would it be?

This would be hard because I get tired of listening to the same music over and over but I think I would go with the 80s.

4.    What is one goal you would like to accomplish in your lifetime?

Running a half marathon is on my bucket list and I recently signed up for one so we will see how that goes! I'd also love to learn how to surf, but that one may be much further down the road.
